Job summary:
You will be respectfully and creatively supporting adults with developmental disabilities in developing skills needed to be active and included in the community. Services will be offered in a manner respectful of the cognitive abilities and goals of the individuals. A person-centered approach to planning activities will be a cornerstone in your work with individuals. As a member of our support worker team, you will be enhancing and supporting the quality of life for individuals by providing the opportunity for full involvement in their community.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Evaluates client needs and develops short term plans (weekly and monthly) to meet such needs with the active participation of clients, their families and social networks. Reviews and evaluates the individual’s progress and makes adjustments to programs as required.
- Identifies social, economic, recreational, educational activities in the community that will meet the adult’s needs. Maintains liaison with and makes referrals to other agencies, professionals, government officials and the community. Provides feedback and support to clients and/or their families.
- Where appropriate and when client requests and shows suitability, initiates and pursues employment opportunities, including resume writing, approaching sympathetic employers, applying for jobs, offering to employers shadowing and training (based on employers job description and your hours of availability).
- Assists clients with appropriate daily life skills to maintain their home (i.e. meal times, bed times), social skills. Teaches and assists clients with activities such as grooming, hygiene, reminders re: medication, basic cooking, money management, shopping, household safety and pet care.
- Assist clients in attending appointments when necessary and may provide transportation to leisure activities and employment opportunities.
- Assists with behavior management training so as to function appropriately in the programs and community gatherings they attend; to participate safely and independently.
- Provides clients with a positive role model.
- Attends client related community meetings, content of community meetings are reported to your supervisor.
- Recognizes, analyzes and deals with potential crisis situations i.e. clients’ aggressive behavior to ensure no harm comes to the client, staff and/or the public. Develop strategies to deal with such situations and inform your supervisor when incidents arise.
- Provides emotional support and feedback to clients and their family and friends when concerned.
- Provides written as well as verbal reports regarding clients’ daily activities and progress (goals and accomplishments).
- Ensures health and safety standards are maintained. Recommended courses are attended or completed. CLBC website information is reviewed and new materials are studied.
- It is the responsibility of the worker to ensure that all requirements are met to provide safe transportation, including car maintenance and snow tires. Also that all current certificates and related documents are updated and on file.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Diploma in a related human/social service field is required for the position
- Emergency First Aid and CPR Certifications.
- Reliable vehicle and satisfactory driver’s abstract
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check
- One (1) year of training and experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
- This position requires Union Membership with BCGEU General Services

Job summary:
Provides support, security, advocacy, information, education, crisis intervention and referrals to residents and crisis line callers, also responsible for the general upkeep and daily operation of the Transition House.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Screens prospective residents for suitability prior to admission. Conducts intake interviews. Orients and assists residents to settle in the house.
- Maintains strict confidentiality of client information and any information gained as a result of employment at Haida Gwaii Society for Community Peace (HGSCP).
- Assesses residents’ immediate needs and assists them to define and implement an action plan. Provides information to residents on resources available and recommends appropriate services including all HGSCP programs i.e. Stopping the Violence Women’s Counselling (STV), Victim Services (VSP), Child and Youth Counselling (CWWA) and Outreach.
- Monitors and ensures the safety and comfort of residents and the security of the facility. Facilitates conflict resolution between residents.
- Provides emotional support, encouragement, goal setting and problem-solving support to residents. Facilitates house and/or support group meetings.
- Liaises with other service agencies and professionals. Maintains current knowledge of issues and resources related to abuse and violence. May participate in public awareness activities about services and issues of abuse.
- Ensures housekeeping services such as laundry, housecleaning, grocery shopping and maintaining supplies are completed. Orders supplies/groceries; performs minor maintenance.
- Coordinates and participates in the Transition House dinner, menu planning and food preparation as well as food inventory duties.
- Provides crisis intervention, risk assessment and safety plan for clients, residents and crisis line callers. Provides information, advocacy for and assistance to residents and crisis line callers.
- Maintains professional and confidential case notes, resident records, documents, forms and statistical information.
- Is familiar with HGSCP Policy and Procedure Manual and the BCGEU Collective Agreement.
- Attends educational training and participates in staff meetings as required.
- Documents and reports in writing to Management any unusual incidents and/or inappropriate behavior that is known or witnessed in a timely manner.
- Orients and assigns duties to volunteers/practicum students.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Graduation from Grade 12 or equivalent
- One (1) year related human/social service experience
- Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- A current valid Class 5 Driver’s License and satisfactory Driver Abstract is required

Job summary:
As a CLBC Residence Worker you will be providing respectful daily living support to adult residents with developmental disabilities living in the CLBC staffed residence. You will also participate in the general daily operation and upkeep of the CLBC staffed residence. While working in close cooperation with the CLBC Community Support Worker team, you will be enhancing and supporting the quality of life for individuals by providing opportunities for full involvement in their community, in a manner respectful of the intelligence and independence already attained by the supported residents.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs other related duties as required.
- Maintains strict confidentiality of client information and any information gained as a result of employment at Haida Gwaii Society for Community Peace (HGSCP).
- Assists the CLCM manager in assessing residents’ immediate needs, in order to define and implement their identified goals in the areas of social inclusion, recreation, life skills, health, and financial. Evaluates client needs and participates in developing short-term plans (weekly and monthly) to meet such needs with the active participation of clients, their families and social networks. Participates in reviewing and evaluating the individual’s progress and assists the CLCM manager to make adjustments to programs and activities as required.
- Assists clients with appropriate daily life skills within the CLBC residence home (i.e. meal times, bed times), social skills. Teaches and assists clients with activities such as grooming, hygiene, reminders re: medication, basic cooking, money management, shopping, household safety and pet care.
- Transports and accompanies residents on social, recreational, and community outings to events and activities as identified in the short-term client program plans. Coordinates with Community Living Support Workers and the CLCM manager to connect residents with community inclusion activities as identified in personal program plans.
- Provides information to residents on available community resources and recommends appropriate services including all HGSCP programs i.e. Stopping the Violence Women’s Counselling (STV), Victim Services (VSP), Child and Youth Counselling (CWWA) and Outreach.
- Monitors and ensures the safety and comfort of residents and the security of the facility. Facilitates conflict resolution between residents.

- Assists with behaviour management training so as to support the clients to function appropriately within the CLBC residence as well as in the programs and community gatherings they attend, to participate safely and independently.
- Recognizes, analyzes and manages potential crisis situations such as residents’ aggressive or upset behavior in order to ensure no harm comes to the client, staff and/or the public. Participates in and provides input toward developing behavioral intervention strategies to deal with such situations and informs the CLCM supervisor when new incidents arise. Works to implement behavior management strategies as identified by the CLCM manager and behavioral consultant.
- May assist residents with various basic personal care needs as required, such as grooming, showering, dressing; cooperates with home care service professionals to ensure basic personal care needs are met for residents.
- Provides crisis intervention, risk assessment and safety planning for residents. Provides information, advocacy for and assistance to residents.
- Provides emotional support and feedback to clients and their family and friends regarding current issues with the supported individuals.
- Maintains professional and confidential case notes, resident records, documents, forms and statistical information by entering relevant information into the client information software and into communication and statistics logs.
- Attends educational training and participates in staff meetings as required.
- Documents and reporting in writing to the supervisor any unusual incidents and/or inappropriate behavior that is known or witnessed.
- Is familiar with HGSCP Policy and Procedure Manual and the BCGEU Collective Agreement.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- This position is dependent on a Criminal Records Check.
- Minimum Grade 12 or G.E.D. equivalent.
- Social service worker courses/education and or experience would be an asset.
- Required to complete certification in Standard First Aid (2-day course or online course) with a CPR-C component
- Food-Safe Certification
- Class 5 Drivers License and clean Drivers abstract
- Willingness to complete Violence Prevention/De-escalation and other on the job training courses (online and offered by HGSCP as on-the job training)
