Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Wear Purple on October 24, 2024: Support Domestic Violence Awareness
Join us in raising awareness for Domestic Violence Awareness Day by wearing purple on October 24, 2024. The color purple represents wisdom, power, spirituality, luxury, wealth, and nobility, and we wear it to symbolize our commitment to Respect, Consent, Making it Right, and Interconnectedness.
By wearing purple, we show solidarity with survivors of domestic violence and take a stand against all forms of abuse. Let’s unite as a community to bring attention to this important issue and help create a future free from violence.
HGSCP is offering purple ribbons for the community. You are welcome to collect them from the admin house at 2132 Collison Ave in Masset.
Truth and Reconciliation Day
Truth and Reconciliation Day, observed on September 30 in Canada, is a national day of reflection honoring the survivors and victims of residential schools. It serves to acknowledge the lasting impacts these schools have had on Indigenous communities and the ongoing journey towards healing. Also known as Orange Shirt Day, it was inspired by the story of Phyllis Webstad, whose orange shirt was taken from her as a child at a residential school, symbolizing the loss of culture, language, and identity.
The day invites all Canadians to engage in meaningful discussions about Indigenous history, the legacy of colonialism, and the need for genuine reconciliation. It’s a step toward addressing the historical and contemporary injustices faced by Indigenous peoples in Canada.
Overdose Awareness Day
International Overdose Awareness Day, observed on August 31st, is a global campaign dedicated to raising awareness about the devastating impact of overdose. This day seeks to reduce the stigma associated with drug-related deaths and honors the memories of those who have lost their lives to overdose. It’s a time to recognize the pain and grief felt by families and communities while also emphasizing that overdose is preventable. On this day, we advocate for increased access to harm reduction services, life-saving treatment options, and compassionate support for those affected by substance use. Together, we can work towards a future where no more lives are lost to overdose.

International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women
The United Nations General Assembly has designated November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. As we commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, we invite you to join us in breaking the silence surrounding this pervasive issue.
In every country and culture, more action is needed to ensure women in all their diversity live a life free of violence and coercion. Global estimates are worrying:
- about 1 in 3 (30%) women globally experience physical and/ or sexual violence, mostly at the hands of an intimate partner. (Violence Against Women Prevalence Estimates, 2018)
- Such violence starts alarmingly early, almost 1 in 4 (24%) adolescent girls aged 15-19 who have had an intimate relationship has experienced physical or sexual violence from a partner. (Devastatingly pervasive: 1 in 3 women globally experience violence).
This International Day, let us amplify the voices of survivors, honor those who have lost their lives to gender-based violence, and renew our dedication to building a future where women are treated with dignity and respect. Together, we can empower survivors, challenge societal norms, and advocate for policies that promote equality and justice.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month
In November, we come together to shed light on a dark reality that affects countless lives. Domestic Violence Awareness Month is a time to acknowledge, reflect upon, and take action against a pressing issue that affects our communities. At Haida Gwaii Society for Community Peace, we stand in unwavering support of survivors and work tirelessly to provide a safe haven for women fleeing violence.
Every story is unique, but the pain and fear that victims of domestic violence endure are universal. It is a violation of human rights that knows no boundaries of age, race, or socio-economic status. This November, we invite you to join us in our mission to raise awareness about domestic violence and empower those affected to find hope, healing, and a path towards a brighter future.
At Haida Gwaii Society for Community Peace, we offer more than just temporary shelter; we provide a lifeline to those in need. Our dedicated team of staff and volunteers offers support, resources, and a compassionate ear to listen. Together, we create a community of strength and resilience that proves that no one has to face this battle alone.
This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, help us amplify our message. Share our mission, support our cause, and let the world know that we are united in our commitment to end domestic violence. Together, we can create a safer, more compassionate world for all.
Join us this November to raise awareness, provide hope, and stand up against domestic violence. Together, we can make a difference.
