Job Title: Outreach Worker

Reports To: Transition House Director 

Position Type: Permanent part-time, Flexible (10 to 15 hours per week)

Job summary:

Provides supplementary support services to transition house clients as well as community members of Masset, and Old Masset, as well as any previous transition house clients island wide. Activities include but are not limited to community education, consultation, and advice to community agencies on the effects of violence against women. Provides transportation to the Masset Transition House and accompaniment for legal, medical, and other service provider appointments. Provides assessment and supportive lay counselling for women who have experienced violence, abuse or threats. Liaises between HGSCP and other community programs.

This position is required to use their vehicle in the course of their duties. This position is required to be available for call-in hours on an as-needed basis.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops networks and relationships with related service providers (e.g., counseling programs, neighboring transition houses, alcohol and drug counsellors, and other services) to foster a working relationship between services.
  • Works with other community agencies in a consultative/advisory capacity to identify and address the service needs of Women. Including any proposed development of violence against Women programs.
  • Develops and delivers culturally appropriate public education initiatives to raise awareness of the effects of violence against women towards the prevention of violence against women. Plans and oversees HGSCP community and promotional events as related to awareness and prevention of violence and abuse in cooperation with the Transition House Director and the Executive Director
  • Provides public education and develops promotional tools including online social media tools and presence to raise awareness of the HGSCP’s services that are available to Women who have experienced violence, abuse, or threats.
  • Maintains HGSCP’s online social media presence including Facebook and Instagram accounts and attends community events as a social media correspondent as related to the goal of ending violence against women. Promotes HGSCP employment opportunities by posting open external job ads on social media channels.
  • Prompts and promotes culturally sensitive support mechanisms based on the needs of individual women who reside in Masset, Old Masset area.
  • Facilitates women’s understanding of their experience and the emotional and psychological impact of the trauma resulting from abuse or violent experience.
  • Assists Women who have experienced violence, abuse, or threats, through referrals to appropriate services such as safe, affordable housing, etc.
  • Provides transportation, accompaniment, and advocacy, as required for service delivery at the transition house in Masset, including for medical or sexual assault emergencies, legal, housing search, or other social services appointments.
  • Provides referrals and follow-up support by phone and in person to women who have accessed Outreach and Transition House services; and
  • Conducts appropriate administrative duties and other related duties as required. 

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Grade 12 or GED qualification
  • One (1) year related human/social service experience providing services to women who have experienced violence or providing outreach or similar services.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Computer Skills: familiar with Office programs, some data input and research capabilities, social media skills, internet use and email
  • Strong networking, organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication skills
  • Event planning experience
  • An understanding of systemic discrimination facing women and the dynamics of violence against women
  • This position is dependent on a satisfactory Criminal Records Check (Vulnerable Sector).
  • This position is required to use their vehicle in the course of their duties. The successful applicant is required to have a valid drivers’ license, a clean driver’s abstract and a reliable vehicle at their disposal.

Morning: 7 am – 3 pm

Afternoon: 3 pm – 11 pm

  • Assesses residents’ immediate needs and assists them to define and implement an action plan. Provides information to residents on resources available and recommends appropriate services including all HGSCP programs i.e. Stopping the Violence Women’s Counselling (STV), Victim Services (VSP), Child and Youth Counselling (CWWA) and Outreach. 
  • Monitors and ensures the safety and comfort of residents and the security of the facility.  Facilitates conflict resolution between residents. 
  • Provides emotional support, encouragement, goal setting and problem-solving support to residents. Facilitates house and/or support group meetings. 
  • Liaises with other service agencies and professionals. Maintains current knowledge of issues and resources related to abuse and violence. May participate in public awareness activities about services and issues of abuse. 
  • Ensures housekeeping services such as laundry, housecleaning, grocery shopping and maintaining supplies are completed. Orders supplies/groceries; performs minor maintenance. 
  • Coordinates and participates in the Transition House dinner, menu planning and food preparation as well as food inventory duties. 
  • Provides crisis intervention, risk assessment and safety plan for clients, residents and crisis line callers. Provides information, advocacy for and assistance to residents and crisis line callers. 
  • Maintains professional and confidential case notes, resident records, documents, forms and statistical information. 
  • Is familiar with HGSCP Policy and Procedure Manual and the BCGEU Collective Agreement. 
  • Attends educational training and participates in staff meetings as required. 
  • Documents and reports in writing to Management any unusual incidents and/or inappropriate behavior that is known or witnessed in a timely manner. 
  • Orients and assigns duties to volunteers/practicum students.

Job summary:

As a CLBC Residence Worker you will be providing respectful daily living support to adult residents with developmental disabilities living in the CLBC staffed residence. You will also participate in the general daily operation and upkeep of the CLBC staffed residence. While working in close cooperation with the CLBC Community Support Worker team, you will be enhancing and supporting the quality of life for individuals by providing opportunities for full involvement in their community, in a manner respectful of the intelligence and independence already attained by the supported residents. 

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintains strict confidentiality of client information and any information gained as a result of employment at Haida Gwaii Society for Community Peace (HGSCP). 
  • Assists the CLCM manager by documenting immediate resident needs and providing input into residential care plans for residents, Communicates client needs and participates in providing input into short-term care plans (weekly and monthly) to meet resident needs (social inclusion, recreation, life skills, health and financial) with the active participation of clients, their families and social networks. Assists the manager in identification of potential problems by documenting and reporting any program or client issues. 
  • Assists clients with appropriate daily life skills within the CLBC residence home (i.e. meal times, bed times), social skills. Teaches and assists clients with daily living activities skills such as personal hygiene care, medication, basic cooking, money management, shopping, household safety, pet care.  
  • Transports and accompanies residents on social, recreational, and community outings to events and activities as identified in the short-term client program plans. Coordinates with Community Living Support Workers and the CLCM manager to connect residents with community inclusion activities as identified in personal program plans. 
  • Provides information to residents on available community resources and recommends appropriate services including all HGSCP programs i.e. Stopping the Violence Women’s Counselling (STV), Victim Services (VSP), Child and Youth Counselling (CWWA) and Outreach. 
  • Monitors and ensures the safety and comfort of residents and the security of the facility.  Facilitates conflict resolution between residents.

  • Coordinates and prepares the residence meals; menu planning and food preparation as well as food inventory duties. Shops for and picks up weekly household groceries. 
  • Assists with life skills and behavior management training so as to support the clients to function appropriately within the CLBC residence as well as in the programs and community gatherings they attend, to participate safely and independently.  
  • Recognizes, analyzes and manages potential crisis situations such as residents’ aggressive or upset behavior in order to ensure no harm comes to the client, staff and/or the public.  Participates in and provides input toward developing behavioral intervention strategies to deal with such situations and informs the CLCM supervisor when new incidents arise. Works to implement behavior management strategies as identified by the CLCM manager and behavioral consultant. 
  • Assists residents with personal care needs such as dressing, grooming, personal hygiene, toileting and bathing as needed; cooperates with home care service and health professionals to ensure personal care needs are met for residents. 
  • Provides crisis intervention, risk assessment and safety planning for residents. Provides information, advocacy for and assistance to residents. 
  • Provides emotional support and feedback to clients and their family and friends regarding current issues with the supported individuals. 
  • Maintains professional and confidential case notes, resident records, documents, forms and statistical information by entering relevant information into the client information software and into communication and statistics logs. 
  • Attends educational training and participates in staff meetings as required. 
  • Documents and reporting in writing to the supervisor any unusual incidents and/or inappropriate behavior that is known or witnessed. 
  • Is familiar with HGSCP Policy and Procedure Manual and the BCGEU Collective Agreement. 
  • Performs other related duties as required.

  • Assists clients with appropriate daily life skills within the CLBC residence home (i.e. meal times, bed times), social skills. Teaches and assists clients with activities such as grooming, hygiene, reminders re: medication, basic cooking, money management, shopping, household safety and pet care.
